About the artist

Eden Vence

Charcoal drawings and canvas paintings. Figures, mostly, in changing light.

Looking comes first.

Eden Vence draws and paints figures. A face at rest, a hand, a body turned away. The hope is that a person's interior shows without being spelled out.

The marks stay in. A rubbed-out line, a dent in the paper, a thumbprint of pigment. They belong to the picture.

Lantern light reflects across a face in deep blue darkness.
A painted hand reaches toward a green circular glow.

The materials do some of the talking.

Charcoal is fast and blunt. Graphite catches the light. Paint on canvas has time to settle into weather.
